Victims of Ferry Disaster Remembered
A memorial was held in Tallinn on Tuesday to mark the 16th anniversary of the Estonia ferry disaster, one of the worst maritime tragedies in modern history.
The MS Estonia, a passenger ferry traveling from Tallinn to Stockholm, sank in rough seas on September 28, 1994, killing 852 of the 989 passengers and crew on board.
Controversy continues to surround the cause of the tragedy. An official report concluded that locks on the bow door failed, allowing the door to become detached from the ship, but later independent investigators claimed to have found evidence of an explosion.
In terms of death toll, the event was the second worst peacetime shipping disaster in Europe, surpassed only by the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912.
