Jaan Männik, who ends his term as head of the Bank of Estonia's supervisory board today, says he is actively building a new political party.

"I believe Estonia should be developing more quickly than it is. Something has to change in Estonian society. Either the governing parties have to reconstruct themselves internally or a new political force must be found," Männik told

“When creating something new, you cannot walk around all day and think about whether to establish a new party or not. It's like starting an airplane - you have to put the pedal to the metal and decide at one point whether to take off into the air or to hit the brakes. That decision will be made at the end of the year. But I want to say that I am working on founding a party and I have put pedal to the metal,” he said.

Männik, who first came forth with his plan in March, said there is a lot of interest and he is planning to start recruiting members in the fall.

Born in Sweden, Männik is a mechanical engineer by training. He was the head of Eesti Telekom from 2000-2007. He has been on the supervisory boards of Estonian Air, the National Development Fund, EMT and Elion.
