Saaremaa to Hold Unification Referendum ({{commentsTotal}})

Saare County is planning a non-binding, island-wide referendum on merging all of its municipalities.

Saare Hääl reported last week that the poll will be conducted in each of the island's 14 local governments, asking residents an identical question: “Do you support the formation of a united Saaremaa municipality in the future?”

Saaremaa has invited other islands, including Ruhnu and Muhu islands, which are under Saare County, to hold a similar referendum.

“We are cooperating with Gotland, Öland, Bornholm and other Baltic Sea islands, where united municipalities already exist,” said Saare County Governor Kaido Kaasik.

The poll will be held on October 20, in parallel with the nationwide local elections.
