Not All Speed Limits Need to Be Reduced, Says Official
Aivo Adamson, who leads the Road Administration, said that the public has been left with the impression that the state's agenda is to lower all speed limits, but plenty of places should see raises instead.
“If the 2+2 lane roads [two traffic lanes per direction] are well-maintained, 110 kilometers per hour should be permitted in the winter,” Adamson said in today's Eesti Päevaleht.
However, he said, limits should be lowered on 5,000 state-maintained gravel roads, where currently a 90 kph limit is in place.
Villu Vane, an adviser to the agency, told Postimees last August that 1+1 roads should have a 90 kph limit throughout the year, dropping the summertime limit from 100 kph. Travelers only win a couple of minutes with higher speed limits, he said.
Speed limits for 1+1 and 2+2 highways are usually raised from 90 kph to 100 kph and 110 kph for the summer.
