Students Bring Home 8 Olympiad Medals
Three silver and five bronze medals were claimed by Estonian high school students in two separate international academic tournaments last week.
All five Estonian competitors were successful in the 44th international physics Olympiad in Denmark last week, with Andres Põldaru from the Tallinn 32nd Secondary School, Kristo Ment (Pärnu Koidula Secondary School) and Kaur Aare Saar (Hugo Treffner Gümnaasium) all coming second.
Kristjan Kongas (Old Town Educational College) and Joonas Kalda (Tallinn Secondary Science School) both took home bronze medals.
The 381 students from 83 nations were tasked with solving three theoretical and two experimental problems.
At the end of the tournament, Estonia was 17th overall, but fourth in he European standings.
Three bronze from down under
Estonian high school students also fared well at the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Brisbane, Australia, picking up three bronze medals.
Andres Erbsen, Janno Veeorg and Jaan Toots were successful, with only the team's youngest member, Oliver-Matis Lille leaving without a medal.
Of the 600 participants, the first 25 were awarded gold medals, the next 50 silver and 75 contestants walked away with a bronze medal.
The students' task was to write a computer program.
