Estonia's top tennis player Kaia Kanepi is through to the second round of the US Open after defeating local Vania King 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

King (WTA 130) began well, taking a 3-1 lead, which helped her win the first set. She then took a 2-0 lead in the second set, after which Kanepi (WTA 27) began to battle, winning the set 7-6 after a 7-4 ending.

Kanepi will meet Anna Schmiedlova (WTA 107) of Slovakia in the second round on either Wednesday or Thursday.

The Estonian has been in good form this year, winning the Brussels Open at the end of May before making the top eight at Wimbledon in the beginning of July.
