Parliament Begins New Session
The nation's Parliament reconvened today after its three-month summer break, opening the session with a speech by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.
Along with the 2014 national budget, which has already drawn criticism from the opposition, the much debated new Basic Schools and Upper Secondary Schools Act will be on this session's agenda.
The act was passed on the last day of the previous session, but a number of articles had been stripped from the bill, with the Cabinet promising to debate them in Parliament in the fall.
In his speech, President Ilves called for politicians to be more honest with voters in light of the local elections set to take place in a month.
The president also said that politicians should not be distracted by the elections and should carry on with reforms such as the administrative redrawing of the nation.
