Champions League Debut Ends in 14-0 Defeat
Estonia's first ever foray into the world's most prestigious club football competition, the Champions League, ended in the worst possible way, with the women's football team Pärnu JK finding themselves on the wrong end of a 0-14 outcome.
Pärnu was unfortunate to draw the German champion and last year's winner of the women's Champions League, VfL Wolfsburg, as its opponent in the first round of the competition.
The Germans opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the game, and put the icing on the cake in the second minute of injury time.
The rematch will take place in Wolfsburg, the city of Volkswagen fame, which is the major sponsor of the team, on October 16.
In August Pärnu battled to second place in a qualifying group of the tournament, defeating the Greek and Macedonian champions 3-1 each, and drawing with Finnish champions Vantaa PK-35. No team from the men's championships has been close to qualifying for the tournament.
After 16 games, Pärnu JK are currently leading the Estonian Championships by 14 points, while the last time they were not crowned champions was in 2009.
