This Week's Weather: Trending Warmer, Wetter
After another day of clear skies and chilly air, Estonia can expect to be hit by a low-pressure system that will bring moisture and slightly warmer temperatures to the country.
The same zone of high pressure that kept the clouds at bay on Monday should also ensure a dry Tuesday, according to the latest forecast from the Meteorology and Hydrology Institute.
But the tradeoff will be a particularly frigid night, with inland temperatures falling to -7 to -2 C before daybreak on Tuesday. A new front moving in from the west means that winds are likely to increase as the day goes on and precipitation could reach the large islands by evening. Daytime thermometer readings should be 2 to 6 C, dropping to -2 to +3 C at night inland.
This week's meteorological turning point is expected to come on Wednesday with the arrival of a warm air mass that will linger through Friday. Current indications are that rain clouds will spread across the mainland in the predawn hours, leading to sleet at first, then rain. Chances of showers will be highest north of the line stretching from Pärnu to Narva. Strong winds, which could gust up to 65 kph on the coasts, are also expected. Wednesday's temperatures should be 8 to 12 C during the day, and are expected to remain a relatively warm 7 to 10 C at night.
Rain should continue Thursday, when thermometer readings are likely to get up into the 10 to 13 C zone, lowering only slightly to 6 to 9 C after dark.
More showers are in the cards for Friday, but these should start to taper off in the western part of the country as the system moves off towards Russia. Daytime highs are expected to be 8 to 11 C.
