In a case of mixed messages, the Ministry of the Environment has said it is not preparing for a new government valuation of land as was reported yesterday.

Minister of Agriculture Helir-Valdor Seeder said yesterday that the Land Board, which an Environment Ministry agency, is in the process of developing a new system of land appraisals.

To the contrary, the Ministry of the Environment said today that it is seeking to get rid of state valuations altogether, reported Postimees.

"Assigning land a price through a state campaign is an outdated, expensive and artificial system," said Environment Ministry press representative Berit-Helena Lamp.

"Therefore we are not planning a new valuation campaign," she said.

The minister of agriculture had said the Land Board is currently working out a methodology in order to carry out a new valuation of Estonia’s land, as the government’s last appraisal took place in 2001.
