Finnish Court Sentences Estonian Mother to Life for Double Infanticide
Estonian Karmen Kivilo was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her newborn twins last summer in a small town north of Helsinki.
According to the ruling, the 27-year-old woman hid her pregnancy from the father and family, and killed the children after giving birth, Helsingin Sanomat reported today.
Police said she suffered under severe economic and social stress.
The police found the two dead infants in early October last year while investigating an unrelated disappearance. One of the bodies of the children was found in a house, the other a few kilometers away on the side of a road.
Kivilo claimed in court that the babies were stillborn, and forensics could not confirm or disprove the claim. The court ruled that the children were alive at birth based on an earlier testimony by Kivilo herself.
