The Minister of Culture has handed its Citizen of the Year award to folklorist and academic Marju Kõivupuu, who is also ambassador of the current Heritage Year.

Kõivupuu is senior research fellow of landscape and culture at Tallinn University. She also produces television and radio programs on the Estonian language and culture.

Her book on Estonian ethnic medicines was published this year, and she sits on countless boards and councils dealing with culture and folklore.

The former head of the National Museum, Krista Aru, won the title last year, while other notable laureates have been former president Lennart Meri (2003), Olympic skier Andrus Veerpalu (2006), composer Erkki-Sven Tüür (2009) and footballer Konstantin Vassiljev (2011).
