Tartu Holds '1%' Referendum
From today till Sunday, citizens of Tartu will vote on how to spend 1 percent of next year's budget.
It is the first vote of its kind in Tartu, with the sum of the earmark amounting to 140,000 euros, reported ETV. The voting age for the event will be 16, less than the 18 for most elections.
The ballot will include 74 proposed initiatives, which policy experts filtered out from 158 initial ideas that were submitted from August to September.
"The people of the city are broad-minded and are very clever. They submitted ideas related to very different areas of city life," said Tartu Deputy Mayor Raimond Tamm.
Proposals include renovating children's playgrounds, streets and buildings, as well as vertical community gardens, a river tram and ways for integrating the Emajõgi river with the city.
Officials say they plan to continue the initiative in the future.
