Rescue Official Suspected of Bribery, Flouting Fire Safety Code
Authorities have detained a senior regional Rescue Service inspector who is suspected of taking bribes in exchange for falsifying fire safety approvals for building projects and detailed plans.
The suspect, detained last Wednesday but announced yesterday, is a technical inspector in the Eastern district who was responsible for determining whether or not projects meet fire safety requirements, police spokeswoman Jelena Filippova told uudised.err.ee that the inspector worked in the Narva and Sillamäe area.
The Rescue Service, which learned of the suspicions from a tip and informed the police, said it had removed the suspect from his position.
"We need to be trustworthy and honest and make sure that those principles are followed by every member of the organization," said the director general of the agency, Kuno Tammearu.
