Citizenship Most Often Abandoned for Finnish Passport
In the first half of the year, 45 individuals gave up their Estonian citizenship, most often switching to a Finnish passport.
In that period, 17 opted for Finnish, nine for Russian, seven for German, three for Danish, two for US, one for Italian and one for Lithuanian citizenship, reported Postimees.
So far this year, the number of people giving up their citizenship has been a little lower than during the same period last year.
Under the Citizenship Act, anyone born at a time when one parent is an Estonian citizen also becomes a citizen. But it also rules out dual citizenship. The Constitution guarantees that those who have the right to Estonian citizenship from birth cannot have it taken away.
