A 22-year-old man's 17-year sentence for murder has been upheld after the Supreme Court decided not to hear his appeal.
The convicted, Aarne Kuusalu, killed and robbed an 80-year-old man and severely injured a 76-year-old woman at Rahumäe cemetery last year, reported uudised.err.ee. The murder received a fair amount of coverage for its particularly brutal details, in which the attacker had beat the victim repeatedly with a gravestone, dragged him across pavement and attempted but failed to steal a ring from the victim's finger.
Having twice before been criminally convicted, the attacker pled guilty last April. His lawyer had tried to get the sentence reduced to 14 years, the average sentence for the type of crime. A higher court confirmed the ruling this summer. The murder took place on August 11, 2012 and Kuusalu was arrested on August 24.
