Father Handed 1-Month Prison Sentence for Accidental Death of Son
Harju County Court has sentenced a man to one month in prison for leaving his seven-year old son home alone in an incident where the child fell to his death.
Under the Monday decision, referred to in Estonia as a shock punishment, the 51-year-old will also have a three-month suspended sentence. According to the charge, the man left his son locked in at his home to meet friends in April last year, under the assumption that the mother of the child would arrive three hours later.
Four hours later the child, still alone, suffered fatal injuries when attempting to leave the fourth floor apartment by climbing down from the balcony. The father pled not guilty.
Shop owner sentence finalized
A shop owner in Narva has lost her appeal against her conviction for a 2007 incident involving the death of a 12-year old boy.
The incident occurred in July 2007, when the child was hanging on to a cable attached to a weight that had once been used to balance a cellar hatch belonging to the shop. The weight came loose and fell on the boy.
Last November, Viru County Court sentenced the owner of the shop, OÜ Rosehill, to two years suspended with a three-year probation period. After an unsuccessful appeal to Tartu District Court, the owner petitioned the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court said today that they will not hear the case, meaning that the initial sentence goes into effect.
