Estonia's highest ranked tennis player, Kaia Kanepi, has began the year's first tournament with a win, beating American Victoria Duval 6-1, 6-3 at the Apia International.

Kanepi (WTA 25) began well against her opponent, who is ranked 140 places below her, going up 5-0, before the American clawed one game back.

The second game was a little more nerve-wracking with Kanepi finally breaking away after a 3-3 tie.

Kanepi's next opponent will be Germany's Angelique Kerber (WTA 9), who knocked her out of the third round of the US Open at the end of August. That game is likely to be played on Tuesday afternoon, Australian time.
