Cod, Baltic Herring Quotas Increase
Estonia's professional fishermen will be allowed to catch 25 percent more Baltic herring this year while cod quotas are also increasing compared with 2013, but salmon and Baltic sprat quotas have been cut.
The fishermen will be able to catch 2,533 tons more Baltic herring from the Baltic Sea, up to 12,644 tons, while the figure for the Gulf of Riga also increased, Meie Maa reported today.
The number of salmon that can be caught in the Baltic Sea has been decreased by 283 fish to 3,589, while 25,442 tons of Baltic sprat may be caught, a four percent decrease compared with last year.
Minister of Environment Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said that the increased quotas were a result of successful negotiations with the European Commission and healthier fish populations.
