Additional Votes for Families Would Boost Birth Rates, Says Politician
Head of the Parliament's Social Affairs Committee and Deputy Chairman of IRL Margus Tsahkna has said that stopping the dwindling of the nation's population demands radical measures, such as giving parents extra votes at elections.
“Phasing in family voting would fundamentally change things. By giving children a vote, which would be effected by parents, the political clout of families with children would increase,” Tsahkna told uudised.err.ee today.
He said that politicians would be forced to cater more to families and find resources to execute family-friendly policies.
As of January 1, Estonia's population is 1.31 million, down 10,000 compared with a year ago.
