Many E-Health System Problems Already Fixed, Says Foundation ({{commentsTotal}})

Raul Mill, the head of the E-Health Foundation, which is tasked with developing the nation's online health services, has hit back at criticism from the National Audit Office, saying many problems have already been fixed or are in the works.

Mill told uudised.err.ee today that one of the criticized projects, the Electronic Health Record, has been vitalized, and 8,700 healthcare workers have registered, adding that the average number of monthly information requests has increased from 60,000 to 240,000 in three years.

The Digital Image solution has been fully developed, Mill said, but a rival database has prevailed.

He said that many of the highlighted problems are not technical, but stem from a lack of organization on the part of medical institutions.

Reviewing the figures, Mill said Estonia has created a nationwide system for only 15 million euros, and is the envy of many countries. He added that Finland is looking towards Estonia, when creating its own system.

The National Audit Office today released a report on the development of the nation's health care system, saying only one in four major projects are up and running, and costs have spiraled from a planned 2.8 million to 15 million euros.

The report said that many of the projects were due to enter service in 2008, pointing the finger at the Ministry of Social Affairs.
