Votic Dictionary Finally Complete After Half a Decade of Work
A Votian-Estonian-Russian dictionary has finally been published, after work began on the book in 1959.
The Votic language is the closest language to Estonian in the Uralic language family, and has also been considered a dialect of Estonian, ETV reported on Tuesday.
“The publication of the Votic dictionary is important as it is a testament to the Votian people. Fewer than 60 people speak the Votic language currently, with a 2010 Russian census showing them to number 68,” Mari Uusküla, the head of the Department of Finno-Ugric Languages and Dialects at the Institute of the Estonian Language said.
The locus of the language lies just east of Narva, around the delta of the Luga river.
