Supreme Court Ruling Opens Doors to Removing MP Immunities ({{commentsTotal}})

Prosecutor General Norman Aas said the Supreme Court has finally brought clarity to the matter of stripping diplomatic immunity from members of Parliament.

Speaking to uudised.err.ee today, Aas said the decision affects ongoing investigations, and that the Prosecutor's Office are planning to seek the removal of immunity from three Center Party MPs; Lauri Laasi, Priit Toobal and Urbo Vaarmann.

The ruling followed a question by Indrek Tedera, Estonia's Chancellor of Justice, who asked whether legislation concerning the removal of immunity, including the requirement that any decision to remove immunity from an MP must be approved by both the Chancellor and Parliament, is constitutional.

The court found that current legislation, which gives the Chancellor the competence to judge whether the Prosecution can carry on criminal investigations against MPs is constitutional.
