Private Security Patrols to Take to Old Town's Party Street
In an initiative led by Tallinn's Nimeta bar, private security foot patrols will take to the Old Town's Suur-Karja street on weekends, after the city discussed sanctions over noise complaints at the beginning of the year.
The move was announced after negotiations between Nimeta, the other bars on Suur-Karja — which is considered the city's noisiest street — and the police and city officials.
There is yet no word on the permanent status of a previous decision by the city to curb opening times for Nimeta and two other bars, which was halted by the Tallinn Administrative Court at the beginning of February after the pubs challenged the decision, but temporarily delayed before its implementation.
Citing noise complaints from residents in the neighborhood and other reasons, city officials had sought to make the bars close at midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends starting on February 10.
Nimeta, open till 6 a.m. on weekends and almost as late on other days, has long been a favorite drinking hole and sports pub. It was one of many foreign-owned pubs that opened in the 1990s and one of the only ones to survive until now under its original name.
