If the new coalition fulfills its promise, police salaries could be increased to near the national average at the beginning of 2015.

The Police and Border Guard Board last week announced cutting 100 jobs to increase the minimum monthly gross salary to 900 euros from January 1, and if funds earmarked for increasing public sector wages are approved in the 2015 budget, then the minimum salary of a police officer could rise to nearly 1,000 euros, Eesti Päevaleht reported today.

The coalition has agreed to set aside 28 million euros for public sector wage increases, which would increase salaries in the state sector by 5 percent on average, and would follow a similar pledge from last year.

Currently about 150 officers leave the force each year due to low salaries, most heading to construction work in Finland or to better paying state jobs such as in the Tax Board.
