Number of Euroskeptic MEPs Likely to Increase, Oviir Says
The number of Euroskeptic MEPs is likely to increase after this summer's elections, MEP Siiri Oviir said on Wednesday.
Speaking on the ETV program Foorum, which broadcasted from Brussels this time, featuring all five current Estonian MEPs, Oviir said the results of the recent local elections in France indicate an increase of anti-EU sentiment.
“We already have them here [in Brussels], too. They never go to committee meetings and if they do, they never make proposals. The leader of their faction has never attended a committee meeting in five years, but when it is his turn to speak, he speaks very angrily. I think they are a pointless crowd of people. If the majority votes green, they vote red, if the majority votes red, they vote green and that's how it goes,” she said.
Vilja Savisaar-Toomast and Kristiina Ojuland also mulled the candidates they'd rather not see in the EU parliament, highlighting Center Party's Yana Toom, a former Russian Federation citizen who has been a vocal critic of the government.
Ojuland admitted that it is possible that a candidate who does not represent the Estonian interest could get elected, and argued that ensuring jobs and good living standards for all people living in Estonia would be the best way to make sure they will not consider electing "anti-Estonian" politicians.
