Former Narva Politicians Convicted
The Viru County Court sentenced former Narva leaders to prison for business-related crimes.
Narva City Council's finance committee chairman Fjodor Ovsjannikov of the Center Party was convicted of influence peddling and violating competition laws.
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment, of which the time spent in jail will be deducted, making the final prison time one year and six months, the court's spokesperson Jelena Muttonen told ERR.
Ovsjannikov was cleared of the charges regarding taking bribes, as the prosecutor had dropped the charges earlier.
Former Narva Deputy Mayor Andrei Filippov was found guilty of taking bribes from an official and being an accessory to a competition-related crime. He was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison, with the final prison time amounting to one year, seven months and 19 days.
Ovsjannikov was charged with entering into a cartel agreement and setting pricing and other trading conditions in Narva. Only a certain insiders' group of businessmen won public procurements in the city, after paying a bribe amounting to 10 percent of the cost of the contracts made with the city government.
