EP Campaign Should Focus on Relevant Issues, Diplomat Says ({{commentsTotal}})

The European Parliament election campaign does not focus on issues where the parliament actually carries weight, a Foreign Ministry diplomat said.

Speaking on ETV's morning program today, Mats Kuuskemaa from the ministry's External Economic and Development Cooperation Department said that there is no real discussion on subjects that the parliament can actually influence.

“There are many subjects where the European Parliament actually carries very little weight, including foreign policy, which is more an issue of member states,” he said.

Many areas the parliament deals with and actually has influence over, such as the environment, include a lot of technicalities and are not interesting for voters, he said.

Kuuskemaa also said the discussion over whether the EU should become a federation is straight out of a “university textbook.”
