The Internal Security Service (ISS) and the Prosecutor's Office have opened a criminal investigation, suspecting four Information Board staff of embezzlement.

Two of the four names were revealed at a press conference today as being Sergei Bõstrov and Pavel Kotkin, who are both long-term Information Board employees. They are both under arrest, and the prosecution is seeking the arrest of the two others. The Prosecution said other individuals are also involved.

Few details have been revealed, but the prosecution said the men were entrusted with assets belonging to other people, which they kept for themselves.

Besides the corruption, thought to involve a few hundred thousand euros, two of the men were also charged with publishing state secrets.

Saks said once a court ruling has been made, more information can be revealed.

Head of the service, Rainer Saks, said the case is serious and the board itself turned to the ISS to investigate, adding that the discovery shows that internal control mechanisms work. He said the crime was discovered in a routine check and it is the first such instance in the authority’s history.
