Construction has began on the site of the old Tartu department store, which was one of the city's modern symbols after construction in 1966.

Half of the new 70-million complex will house a hotel, a spa and offices, and half the new space earmarked for shops.

The old department store was one of only a few Soviet-era commercial buildings in central Tartu, along with the Kaunas building, now known as Atlantis.
