No Repeat of Gold Haul From Fencing Championships
Estonia won a bronze medal at the 2014 World Fencing Championships, yet expectations were higher as the nation won 2 gold medals at the event a year ago, perhaps the greatest sporting achievement of Estonia in 2013.
Erika Kirpu, 22, part of the European Championship winning team last year, lost to German Britta Heidemann 10:15 in the semi finals at this year's World Championship in Kazan, Russia, in the individual epee tournament.
Irina Embrich made the top eight, losing to the eventual winner, Rossella Fiamingo, 13:15. Last year's champion, Estonian Julia Beljajeva, was beaten by Kirpu 15:9 in the quarter finals.
On the men's side, where Estonian Nikolai Novosjolov won in the individual epee category a year ago in Budapest, Sten Priinits made the top eight, only to lose to Enrico Garozzo 15:9. Novosjolov lost to Finn Niko Vuorinen 8:15 in the first round.
