Ukraine, Russia Agree on Mechanism for Permanent Ceasefire
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he agreed to a ceasefire process, not yet an actual truth, as initially reported, with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin said Putin had not agreed to a ceasefire as Russia was not party to the conflict, BBC reported today.
“They reached a mutual understanding on steps leading to peace,” the office of Poroshenko said.
US President Barack Obama is currently in Estonia. In a press conference, which just ended, Obama said he will not comment on the news as details are yet to be published. He will hold a public speech later today, which will be shown live on ERR News. He said he will focus more on Russia then.
Ukrainian government forces had been making progress in taking back territory from the pro-Kremlin separatists until the end of August, after which reports began to surface of Russian troops on Ukrainian soil, and the separatists began to retake the momentum in the war.
