FSB: Estonian Security Officer Was Apprehended on Russian Soil
FSB, the Russian Federal Security Service, has stated a different version of events in the case of the missing counterintelligence agent, saying they stopped a Estonian Internal Security Service (ISS) operation in the Pskov Oblast near the Estonian border, and arrested an ISS operative.
Earlier today the ISS said one of their officials was abducted at gunpoint by unknown men near the Russian border in southern Estonia.
But the Russian counterintelligence organization says the official was arrested by them, and on Russian soil.
FSB told Interfax they arrested the man, who was carrying a handgun, 5,000 euros and a hidden audio recorder and other materials.
The organization named the Estonian official as one Eston Kohver, an employee of the ISS's Tartu branch.
“Kohver has been apprehended and the necessary investigations will take place,” FSB said.
Eesti Ekspress weekly wrote in 2010 that Kohver joined the police force in 1991 and has specialized in counter-terrorism and working against extremist organizations, both left and right wing.
