The new round of EU sanctions announced on Monday will be more fine-tuned and painful for Russia, says Matti Maasikas, the head of Estonia's permanent representation to the EU.

He said the new measures were officially approved on Monday, although consensus was reached on Friday, but the sanctions will not be implemented yet, with the EU keeping an eye on the situation in Ukraine.

Maasikas said the sanctions go deeper and will probably be more painful, and are likely to be implemented in the next few days.

“The situation in Ukraine must change very radically and very quickly before we can realistically discuss holding off the implementation,” Maasikas said.
