Former head of the Estonian Defense Forces Johannes Kert said the current situation in Ukraine can be described as false calm, and the Russian troops who have been pulled out of Donetsk and Luhansk can appear in other areas of Ukraine.

“Enemy reconnaissance activities around Novoazovsk and Mariupol have intensified recently, and the Russian troops who have left Donetsk and Luhansk could surprise us popping up on another front,” Kert told ETV today.

“The Estonia of the 1920s and '30s has been analyzed in great depth in the past decades - what went wrong and what was right, and how to fix the current Estonia. Ukraine lacks this experience. The constant influence of the secret services of the neighboring state must also not be underestimated. The periods of weakness have been compensated by Moscow with intensive spying and diplomatic activities,” Kert said.

Kert is part of a NGO in Estonia geared towards helping Ukraine. The organization, called “A Free Ukraine,” will hold a charity concert on October 21.

Kert, who was the head of the Estonian Defense Forces between 1996-2000, recently joined the Reform Party.
