Border Guard Keeps a Close Eye on Waters off Two Largest Estonian Islands
The Police and Border Guard (PPA) says it is keeping a watchful eye on the naval activity near Saaremaa and Hiiumaa islands, in relation to Sweden's search for a suspected Russian submarine off Stockholm.
"We have been in contact with our partners in Sweden, Finland and Latvia to learn about their actions and to share information. We continue with our everyday routine of tracking activity on the sea but we are paying closer attention to what happens near Hiiumaa and Saaremaa and looking for possible anomalies in this region," Priit Pärkna of the PPA told ETV's "Aktuaalne Kaamera," the evening news program.
He added: "At the moment we have observed nothing out of the ordinary. We have response capacity in this area and we are ready to act if something happens."
The Swedish military is continuing its search for what has officially been described as "foreign underwater activity" in the Kanholmsfjärden area, just a few dozen kilometers from Stockholm.
