Pentus-Rosimannus: More Sanctions Needed Against Russia
Estonian foreign minister designate Keit Pentus-Rosimannus told a local daily that more EU sanctions against Russia may be needed to have a full impact.
Pentus, who was nominated to become the new Minister of Foreign Affairs after Urmas Paet decided to take a seat at the European Parliament, said it is in the interests of Estonia and the EU that Russia is a stable and democratic neighbor, but there are no signs that this is due to happen anytime soon.
“It is a fact that our neighbor is an aggressive state that does not respect democratic principles and likes to intervene in other countries' affairs. This is the direction Russia is heading to,” Pentus-Rosimannus said to Eesti Päevaleht.
According to Pentus-Rosimannus, there cannot be any easing on the EU sanctions against Russia in a situation where Russia is initiating a new "Cold War" in Europe.
"Quite the opposite, we have to consider implementing new and more far-reaching sanctions against Russia," the Estonian foreign minister designate said.
