Estonian women's curling team beats Scotland, keeps A-division place
Estonian women's curling team placed 8th in the Le Gruyère European Curling Championships, held in Champéry, Switzerland, from November 22-29. The Estonian side only won two matches, but one of them was against former world champions Scotland, whose skip Eve Muirhead also led Team Great Britain to a bronze in 2014 Olympics.
Team members Marju Velga, Küllike Ustav, Helen Nummert, Marie Trumann and Maile Mölder (skip) now also have a chance to secure the last available European zone place to the World Women's Curling Championships 2015 in Sapporo, Japan. The qualification round against the yet unknown winner of the B-division will start on Friday evening.
"Our first objective to stay in the A-division was fulfilled. We will work hard to fulfill the second one: going to World Championships. A-division has offered us the best possible opportunity to grow as a team; only in the European and World Championships can you play against such strong opponents," Mölder told Delfi.
It was the first time that Estonia competed at this level of the European Championships.
The round-robin was won by Russia, who will be joined in the play-offs by Scotland, Denmark and the reigning world champions Switzerland.
