Estonian doctor finally allowed to meet Kohver ({{commentsTotal}})

Russian authorities today finally granted an Estonian doctor permission to check on the abducted internal security service agent Eston Kohver.

Doctor Tiit Meren met the kidnapped Estonian agent at the Lefortovo prison in Moscow. However, an Estonian consul was not permitted to attend at the same time.

According to Meren, Kohver's health is in satisfactory condition.

Estonian government has for long attempted to send a doctor to do the medical check up on Kohver, but so far the Russian authorities had refused to grant a permission.

Estonian Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said that it is a good news, but it is unforgettable that Russia delayed the permission for many months.

“Estonian government will do everything it can to ease Kohver's situation. We will observe his health condition and provide him with medication if necessary. And if needed, we are ready to apply another permit for doctor's visit,” Pentus-Rosimannus said.

The Foreign Minister also criticized Moscow's court decision to extend the custody of the abducted Estonian agent until April 2015, saying that it is a violation of international law.

According to the Estonian Internal Security Service, Kohver was apprehended at gunpoint near Luhamaa border checkpoint on September 5 and taken to Russia. The kidnapping was preceded by jamming of communications and use of a smoke grenade; the interference was said to originate from the Russia side.
