Commander-in-Chief of Estonian Defense Forces Riho Terras has been promoted from major general to lieutenant general by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

Ilves also promoted the deputy commander-in-chief, Artur Tiganik, to brigadier general and Igor Schvede, the head of the Defense Forces' headquarters, to commodore.

Both brigadier and commodore are the fourth highest ranks in the Estonian land ground and navy respectively. Lieutenant general is one step away from full general, the highest rank in Estonia.

The last full Estonian general was Ants Laaneots, who stepped down from the commander-in-chief position in 2011 and is now running for the Parliament.
