Russia is bluffing, says Estonian officer ({{commentsTotal}})

While Russia has been able to draw Western nation to its narrative, in some aspects one can say that Russia is bluffing, says Lieutenant Colonel Eero Rebo, the deputy head of the Estonian Defense Force headquarters.

Rebo told ETV's “Välisilm” program that NATO and other allies have made significant contributions to Estonian's security and added that this answers the question of whether Estonia would be left to fend for itself or not.

“It is now clear that the Germans, Americans and other nations who put troops on the ground or give support in other forms, like air policing, boats or training, are at our side,” he said.

“The question now is how a much weaker, poorer and less powerful Russia was able to draw the West to its narrative and pass itself off as a very strong and powerful player. Figures and other analysis show that NATO's military might, technology, and the readiness to use it at a very short notice, cleary give an advantage of the West. To some extent one can even say Russia is bluffing. That bluff is frightening and unpleasant to Estonia, due to its proximity to the Kremlin regime, but we know it is a bluff,” Rebo said.

“We are today not talking about a security vacuum in Estonia,” he said, adding that allied troops in Estonia serve two purposes – military and political.

“Speaking about the political side, we have almost hit the jackpot – we have US troops. Their permanent presence is guaranteed by rotations, which keeps the air clear,” Rebo said.
