The program of the Night of Museums has become increasingly varied with each year and it is difficult to pick out the most exciting and special events. To make lives easier, Estonian Institute's blog Culture.ee decided to look at the programs of various participating museums and accordingly, selected ten notable events across Estonia that might be worth a visit on Saturday night, this weekend.
Viinistu Art Museum (Viinistu village, Kuusalu parish, Harju country) - take a tour around the seaside museum at sunset to fully enjoy the interactive installations Sofa, Barrel, Curator and Ping-Pong. From 18:00 to 21:00, early birds are treated to a sunset concert by local pianists and at 21:10, the Factory Cinema will screen the new music documentary Impromtu. After viewing the installations, guests can enjoy electronic music from 23:45 onward.
The Museum of Occupations (Toompea 8, Tallinn) - it's the 80's coming back! This year, the museum will be occupied by the banned dance hits of the 1980s. The legendary DJ Einar Kapp will be at the turntable, having heated up dancefloors across Estonia since the 1970s. Every hour from 19:00 to 22:00, dancing will be interrupted because rules, bans and orders are to be followed and apparently, fervent party members are on the move!
House Museum of Flo Kasearu (Pebre 8, Tallinn) - lots of exciting things are happening in the very special house museum of contemporary Estonian artist Flo Kasearu: guided tours, a café and a quiz, but the icing on the cake is the sauna at 21:00.
The Estonian Road Museum (Varbuse, Kanepi parish, Põlva country) - an exhibition Road Full of Gossip will open at 18:00. The gem of the program will begin an hour later, when the twilight lecture The Winding Ways of Gossip will be held, moderated by renowned TV-host-turned-politician Maire Aunaste. At 21:00, Karin and Mati Raamat will demonstrate the possibilities of making music with bicycle bells and an ensemble of bicycle bells will be formed with the help of visitors.
Museum of Coastal Folk (Nurme road 3, Pringi village, Viimsi parish, Harju country) - the museum's retro bus will gear up, making rounds between all the museums of Viimsi. The bus will stop at the Estonian War Museum, Estonian RMK Viimsi Nature Centre, the Viimsi Open Air Museum and the Museum of Coastal Folk, which is celebrating its 90th birthday. On the occasion, the School of Coastal Folk will ring with music again like in the good old times. The great hall will host a gourmet café and there will be live music.
The Chuvash National Costume Museum (Uus 19/Vene 28, Tallinn) - a museum dedicated to the Chuvash people, a Turkic ethnic group, native to an area stretching from the Volga Region to Siberia. On the Night of the Museums, it will introduce Chuvash music, especially old songs, which the audience can sing along even if they don’t know the lyrics and can’t carry a tune. In addition to singing, visitors can acquaint themselves with the Chuvash national costumes, which date back as far as the late 19th century.
The National Archives (J. Liivi 4, Tartu) - host to several outdoor concerts, starting at 18:00, featuring students of the Heino Eller Tartu Music School. Music will be provided by the best musicians of the area.
Kohtla Mining Park (Jaama 1, Kohtla-Nõmme, Ida-Viru country) - the "Estonian deepest experience" will open its doors at 20:00. All enthusiasts can enjoy free underground tours, everyone can ‘mine’ for a treasure, buy handicraft and take part in a raffle. Kirderanniku Choir will perform at 22:00.
