IRL board decides on changes ({{commentsTotal}})

The board of IRL met on Wednesday in light of the recent infighting, culminating in a court of honor investigation. The board voted unanimously to change the party's statutes to better protect it from internal manipulation attempts.

“IRL's internal life has always been public and that is both our strength and weakness,” Tsahkna said, adding that when elected to lead the party in IRL, he was given a mandate to change the party's internal culture, and the board has now also given his goals its backing.

Tsahkna said he has made his proposals to change the statutes to protect the party from internal attacks such as one member bringing in dozens of new members ahead of internal elections. The party has seen dozens of new members, mostly with criminal past, join the party shortly before elections on two occasions.

Tsahkna's proposals include far stricter rules on accepting new members, as well as new rules on electing the party's board. The party is due to hold a congress on October to discuss the proposals.

The board meeting was less productive on proposals by coalition partner the Social Democrats (SDE) to amend the current coalition agreement. The board did not take an official stand on the 15 proposals, made by new SDE Chairman Jevgeni Ossinovski.

Tsahkna said the coalition has already helped the low-income bracket, and current measures do more than the proposed doubling of the tax-free monthly minimum to 400 euros.
