A renowned jazz pianist Iñaki Sandoval Campillo has been named as the new rector of the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy.

Campillo currently works as a professor, dean of graduate studies and director of the Jazz Department at the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona, Catalonia.

Campillo will start his term on September 1, when the current director Anzari Barkalaja leaves his post.

Campillo received a PhD in Art History and Musicology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2013, has worked as a lecturer in the Pamplona Conservatory and as a teaching assistant at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. He also is a renowned jazz pianist with numerous concerts and albums.

He competed against a former director of the UT Pärnu College Garri Raagma for the position, but the 25- member electoral council elected him.
