The trial over a 15-year-old student who shot and killed a teacher in Viljandi in October last year, Estonia's first school-shooting incident, has now began with the teenage shooter admitting to the crime in the first court sitting.

The first sitting, held behind closed doors, took place today. The minor, now 16, said he understands and accepts the charge of murder. He could face up to 10 years in prison.

The next sittings are scheduled for the end of September and beginning of October. A verdict is expected to be made public on October 20.

The student fatally shot teacher Ene Sarap, 56, multiple times using his father's handgun during a lesson at the Paalalinna School in Viljandi. Others were not harmed and the shooter did not resist arrest, waiting in the classroom until police arrived. Authorities have already ruled that the father kept the gun and the ammunition as required by law, and there will be no negligence charges against the father.

Shortly after, the student, named as Vahur by media, was taken to a psychiatric unit. He spent two months in the hospital, after which he was found mentally fit to stand trial.
