Last night's storm left tens of thousands without power supply and seawater submerged streets in coastal towns.

The storms that hit Estonia over the weekend saw gusts of wind of over 30 meters per second and the sea rise to critical levels in several parts of the country.

The rescue services responded to 158 storm-related calls on Sunday.

Fortunately, the seawater levels did not reach the predicted +190 centimeters, staying at around +160, which in Pärnu marks the critical level. Several streets were submerged in Pärnu and Haapsalu, where the water also flooded the ground floor of a seaside spa hotel. In Rohuküla harbor, cars were evacuated to a higher ground from a submerged parking lot.

The largest number of power cuts, mostly due to trees falling on power lines, were in Pärnu, Saare, Viljandi and Harju counties. Power companies hope to return power to all households in two-three days.

According to the met office, strong winds of up to 28 meters per second will continue until this evening. The seawater level will stay at around +70-120 centimeters on average.

Storm warnings still apply to the entire country, especially to the coastal areas.

Estonia’s Easter Monday time loop: Discussing an additional day off

Every year, Estonia reliably asks itself the question whether or not Easter Monday should be made a public holiday. Opinions differ. While one side emphasizes the importance of family time, the other thinks an additional day off would threaten economic growth.

Samost: Kaia Iva’s charisma could help IRL out of long-term low

In Sunday’s “Samost ja Rumm” radio debate show, editor-in-chief of ERR’s online news, Anvar Samost, and journalist and former politician Hannes Rumm discussed the potential and actual candidates for the chairmanship of the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL). At the time of the broadcast, Helir-Valdor Seeder had not yet made his intention to run public.
