German cars dominate the list of Estonia's most stolen cars of 2015, with Volkswagen, BMW and Audi making up the top three, as a statistic of the Police and Border Guard Board show. Lada came in fourth, Ford fifth place.

The statistic, which covers both theft and unauthorized use, includes 80 cases of stolen Volkswagens, 59 BMWs, 36 Audis, 35 Ladas and 29 Fords.

It continues with 27 Opels, 20 Mercedes, 17 Toyotas, nine Mazdas, seven Mitsubishis, Nissans and Volvos, six Hondas, Peugeots and Saabs, five Citroëns, and four Chryslers, Hyundais, Porsches and Skodas.

Toomas Jervson of the Police and Border Guard Board said that the number of cases of theft and unauthorized use of motor vehicles were still declining. “Where in 2005 we registered 1528 cases, ten years later the number was down to 521. Most of the vehicles stolen last year are older cars of the more common kind, relatively few cars of expensive brands get stolen,” Jervson told the Baltic News Service. He added that thieves of luxury cars took advantage of weaknesses in the various smart key systems.
