Sharing economy conference at the Riigikogu ({{commentsTotal}})

A conference on the sharing economy, bringing together around 100 entrepreneurs, experts and politicians from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Cyprus, is taking place at the Riigikogu on Thursday.

Chairman of the Riigikogu's European Union Affairs Committee, Kalle Palling (Reform), said the rapid development of sharing services brought changes in the structure of the economy, which meant there was the need to change laws.

"It's necessary to create a suitable environment for the sharing economy in Estonia, and to be at the forefront, so that regulations would not hinder the development of this new economy. I am sure the conference will give a good overview of the current situation, its potential in Estonia and in the European Union," Palling, whose committee initiated the conference, said.

Juhan Parts (IRL), a member of the same committee, also commented on the conference. "Let's hope the sharing economy won't become a substitute activity offering pseudo-satisfaction to cover up the problems of the real economy," Parts said. He would like to ask Uber at the conference on what terms that company would be ready to roll its billions through Estonia, Parts added.

Participating in the conference are Vice-President of the European Commission Andrus Ansip, Uber's Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, Director General of the Tax and Customs Board Marek Helm and the deputy secretary general for internal market at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, Keit Kasemets. They will discuss the possibilities of new business models in the European Union.

Markus Villig of Taxify, Wisemile founder Arti Kütt, and Enn Metsar of Uber will speak about the implementation of innovative ideas in Estonia.

The conference is held in the Conference Hall of the Riigikogu.
