Prime Minister: Administrative reform and improving security remain priorities
Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) commented on his government’s achievements on Friday, saying that its most important decisions concerned administrative reform and reacting to significant changes in the political environment.
While still heading a business delegation in Japan, Rõivas said in a press release on Friday that improving living standards as well as the ability to swiftly react to changes in the security situation had taken priority.
Rõivas pointed out that the government's administrative reform bill had taken all of 11 months to make it to the Riigikogu, and that 87% of parishes were already discussing potential mergers. “This shows that administrative reform is necessary, and that people believe in its success,” he said.
As another example of a project that had been planned for a long time and was now being realized, the Prime Minister pointed to the work currently done on the country’s eastern border, where the borderline is being cleared, fences are built, and boundary posts replaced.
Rõivas said that security had been a priority for both of his cabinets, and that he planned on going on following this line. “Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, the Syrian civil war, terrorism, all those remain topics for which the leaders of all of the European Union’s governments need to look for solutions,” the Prime Minister said.
The next great challenge for his government would be to get to an arrangement over increased NATO presence in Estonia at the alliance’s coming Warsaw summit, Rõivas said.
