State-owned energy company Eesti Energia is to begin selling fertilizer made from oil shale ash to agricultural and horticultural businesses under the brand name Enefix.

The effects of oil shale ash on soil were studied by Eesti Energia together with the Estonian University of Life Sciences as well as major farmers, and the results of the study confirmed that fertilizer produced from oil shale ash helped plants to absorb nutrients from the soil, reduced plant disease infections, and inhibited moss growth.

Oil shale ash was shown to have a high calcium carbonate content, which helps the soil more quickly neutralize pH levels as well as enrich it with trace elements. Its rapid effects and low unit cost could also help agricultural firms cut costs on fertilization.

Estonia is one of the largest industrial producers of shale oil in the world, producing nearly 1.4 million barrels of shale oil in 2013.

Eesti Energia has the capacity to produce up to nearly 330,000 tons of fertilizer made from oil shale ash, a byproduct of shale oil production, per year.
